Couple Gets Engaged in the Middle of Black Lives Matter Protest

June 7, 2020

While demonstrating in the streets for racial justice, one couple paused to take in the power of love.

In the midst of protesting the death of George Floyd at a Black Lives Matter rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, Xavier Young became motivated to pop the question to his girlfriend, Marjorie Alston.

While the couple, who have been together for two years, had discussed marriage, Young hadn’t figured out the right moment to propose until they were out that day.

“I’d been kind of just watching her protest and make her voice known and make herself known, being seen, and I was like, yeah, this is the girl I want to be with,” Young told People.

The 26-year-old quickly figured out how he was going to get down on one knee.

“I made it seem like I wanted to take in some water because I was hot and tired, and instead of pulling a bottle of water out of my bag, I pulled out the ring and then boom,” Young added. “It was a proposal.”

Alston was in complete shock with the proposal that she almost didn’t give Young the response he wanted.

"My first reaction was to, honestly, run because I was so nervous and did not want a lot of attention on me," the 23-year-old told “Good Morning America.” "But, of course I said, 'Yes.'"

A photographer caught the big moment as it happened and Young later shared the video to his Instagram with the caption: “Making history while witnessing history #blacklivesmatter #blacklovematters.”

Young and Alston are expecting their first child in November and plan to marry in 2021.
