Some Social Security Recipients to Get Stimulus Checks Starting Today

According to the Social Security Administration, many Americans that receive Social Security benefits will get their stimulus checks today.

Low-income community members with disabilities such as age or blindness preventing them from working could receive stimulus payments as soon as today or through the mail by Friday, CBS News reports.

Around 8 million people fall into this category with an average monthly benefit of $541. The stimulus payments should offer significant benefits to this group of Americans under the $2.2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act.

Those who earn less than $75,000 will receive $1,200, giving $2,400 to married couples who earn less than $150,000 total. Children under 17 up these payments by $500 each.

The Social Security Administration recently published instructions, outlining how those who qualify can be sure to get their payments in a timely fashion.

Direct Deposit and Direct Express payments are to begin May 13, while paper checks will begin two days later on May 15.

Confusion surrounded the process of Social Security recipients getting their checks since they aren't required to file taxes and the IRS may not have record of their children. A "non-filer tool" was created for the stimulus check program to navigate these issues.

Those who were unable to claim their dependents this year and may have missed out on the $500 per child will have the opportunity to gain this money on their 2020 tax returns.

Many Social Security recipients have already gotten their checks.
